Thirty years ago (early 1970s):- The public was not aware of animal rights, animal welfare or conservation. Governments were exterminating wolves and other predators. Today:- People are seriously concerned about animal rights, animal welfare and conservation. Wolves and a few other predator species have legal protection in some countries. A precedent has been set:- Wolves were reintroduced in the US to North Carolina and Wyoming in 1989 and to Idaho in 1995 (wolves were exterminated in the US from all but Minnesota and Alaska). Wolves have since been reintroduced to Arizona and New Mexico. There are plans for more wolf reintroductions in the US. Since the 1990s:- A few wolves have started to re-colonise western and northern Europe. They come from remnant populations in Spain, Italy and eastern Europe which are now recovering because of legal protection. Wolves cannot cross the Channel unaided, but:- Britain is a party to European conventions which obligate the Government to study the desirability of reintroducing extinct species and to consider reintroducing wolves.
