Ungulates

The majority of large land mammals are ungulates and, being so many, they are an important part of the diet of the large land carnivores, like wolves, lions, tigers and cougars.

The ungulates include domesticated livestock, like pigs, goats, sheep, cattle and horses, and wild ungulates, like red deer and roe deer (both abundant in the Scottish Highlands), and the largest wolf prey: moose (top right), bison and musk ox.

Ungulate is Latin for hoof. All the ungulates have hooves, made from the same material as claws and finger nails, evolved into blocks for running on. All ungulates are herbivores, meaning animals who feed on herbs: their leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.
